When planting in the garden, a problem people run into is not knowing what plants to use for their yard. We asked our in-house designer, Leah Kay, to give us some ideas when trying to pick out the perfect plant.

The first tip she gives is landscape should always be secondary to the architecture of the home, enhancing what is already there. There are a lot of factors that go into picking the best plants to use. It all depends on the architecture, environmental conditions, and the surrounding landscape of the home. Along with this, the morning sun is a lot different from the afternoon sun, which is something to consider.

If you are looking for a generalized list of plants, here are a few that do well:

Sun Plants-

Panicled Hydrangeas

Muhly Grass

Distylium

Boxwoods

Shade Plants-

Lenten Roses

Autumn Fern

Oakleaf Hydrangeas

Plum Yew

Boxwoods

Leah states “It’s hard to beat boxwoods and hydrangeas. They are classic, southern, and you can select a variety to meet your needs”.

However, every yard is different with its own set of challenges. If you find these don’t work for you, Leah would be happy to help pick out plants specific to your yard!
